Introduction

Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness.

Psalm 29:2 NIV

True worship has nothing to do with a particular style or liturgy. It is, instead, a matter of the heart.

The Objectives of Worship

  • True worship involves recognition of worth in God, and the offering of our honor, praise, and adoration to the One who is altogether worthy.
  • To worship genuinely is to know God. To know God genuinely is to be in a king/subject relationship with Him. In worship we acknowledge God's kingship in our lives and His right to rule over us.
  • Worship is for God's benefit. He has the center stage. During worship we yield ourselves to God's rule and dominion.1 Chronicles 29:10-1

The Essence of Worship As Practiced at PJGH

The form of our worship service is unstructured. By this we mean it is not “liturgical” (ritualistic), nor is it pre-ordered or conducted by a leader. As we believe in the priesthood of all believers, we leave it to members, under the direction and prompting of the Holy Spirit, to participate in the worship. Individuals, moved by the Spirit, may give out a hymn or song, lead in prayer, read a relevant portion of Scripture or give an appropriate word of praise or exhortation. Needless to say, “everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way.” (1 Cor.14:40).

Following the time of offering praise to the Lord God our Father, we remember the Lord Jesus Christ in His death, in obedience to His command, by partaking of the bread and wine, emblems of His broken body and shed blood. Not only is this a time of remembrance and thanksgiving for what He has done on our behalf (1 Cor. 11:23-26) but also of assurance as ‘this cup is the new covenant in my (Christ’s) blood.” The Lord’s Supper is also a feast of fellowship (1 Cor. 10:16,17).

Further, by celebrating the feast, we not only proclaim His death but also anticipate His return (1 Cor. 11:26). Taking part in the Lord’s Supper is a serious matter and calls for both a proper appreciation of Christ’s work and of critical self-examination (1 Cor. 11:27-29).

The offertory is an essential part of the Worship Service. We believe that the offering of our substance (monetary gifts), is as much an act of worship as the sacrifice of self (our bodies, Rom. 12:1), our songs of praise and speech (prayers, exhortation), of adoration and thanksgiving, and our acts of services (Col. 3:17, 23, 24).

The funds received are used for the support of workers, mission projects and Christian organizations involved in evangelism and social concern.

It is usual to have the ministry of the Word of God after the Lord’s Supper. Brethren from our own and other fellowships who are spiritually gifted are invited to speak on topics that are part of a pre-arranged program.

However, the first Sunday of every month is designated as Family Worship Sunday when a Worship leader will be responsible for the program. A few other members of the assembly will be also invited to take part in the service.

Worship of God is an integral part of our corporate activity at PJGH. Our congregation meets for the Worship Service every Sunday morning at 8.30 am.

Thought for the Week:

The Two Ways

Enter through the narrow gate….that leads to life and there are few who find it.

Matthew 7:13-14

The way that is broad is easy, attractive, inclusive, permissive and self-oriented way of the world. It has few rules, few restrictions and few requirements. All you need to do is profess Jesus or at least seem religious and you’ll be accepted into the group.

The narrow way is the hard and demanding way – the way of self-denial and the cross. When Jesus was asked,”Lord, are there just a few who are being saved?” He replied, “Strive to enter though the narrow door, for many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able” (Lk 13 : 23 – 24).The Greek word for strive indicates that entering the door to God’s kingdom takes conscious, purposeful and intense effort.

The narrow way is for those who wants God’s kingdom at any cost. Make sure that you are following Christ as Lord along that narrow way. We certainly live amid a “broad way” mentality but Christ has shown us otherwise that we should live on His Word and ways.

We thank Thee, O blessed Master, that Thou hast forgiven us our sins and has made us Thine forever through your precious blood. Amen.
