Introduction

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

Acts 1:8 NIV

Witnessing and sharing Christ with others is imperative and required to be undertaken by the disciples of the Lord Jesus. The Great Commission is to be undertaken through all ages until His glorious return again on earth.

At PJGH our mission statement for evangelism is

Every Christian an effective witness for Christ through an enabling Church and empowered by the Holy Spirit

The Objectives of Evangelism
  • To help the members of PJGH become more evangelistic and mission oriented in their lives and lifestyle
  • To practically equip church members to communicate the gospel in an authentic (personal and heartfelt), clear (easily understood and memorable) and relevant way (taking the post-modern mindset/issues into consideration).
  • To equip and empower Christians (particulars those who are part of PJGH) to share Christ through word and deed in their everyday lives to people whom they come into contact with.
  • To strengthen and be a resource for other ministries in PJGH who are undertaking evangelistic ministry either through one to one, small groups or mass evangelistic meetings or campaigns.

Strategy and Activities

To achieve the above objectives, the Evangelism and Outreach Committee (also known as Evangelism Working Group – EWG) coordinates and strives to plan and implement programs for the church geared towards providing opportunities for the gospel to be shared and also training church members to be more effective witnesses. Amongst such programs are:

1. Christianity Explored

This is a 10 week seeker friendly course designed by Rico Tice of All Souls Church (UK) which systematically explains the gospel and leads seeker through a bible study of the whole gospel of Mark.

Developed over 10 years, Christianity Explored is an informal course for people who'd like to investigate Christianity, or just brush up on the basics. It explores who Jesus was, what his aims were, and what it means to follow him.

It is well supported by workbook, Leader’s Guide and Video presentation. Each lesson or class last about an hour and a half.

2. Becoming A Contagious Christian workshop

This is an eight (8) sessions program produced by Willow Creek Resources, authored by Bill Hybels and Mark Mitteberg. This program helps Christians to overcome their fears about sharing Christ and introduces fresh approaches to sharing Christ which fits their natural style and personality

Many Christians think there is only one way of evangelism that is through CONFRONTATION. Yet in this program, the authors show that as God has so uniquely designed and equipped each one of us, different styles of evangelism reflecting individual personality and styles can be identified and used effectively for evangelism.

The program includes various support resources including workshop kit, video as well as Leader’s Guide.

This program has proven to be highly effective in training Christian through Relational Evangelism.

Thought for the Week:

Mercy Compared to Forgiveness, Love, and Grace

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

Matthew 5:7

To understand the significance of mercy, let’s compare it to three amazing attributes of God. First, mercy has much in common with forgiveness, although it is distinct from it. God’s forgiveness of our sins flow from His mercy. But mercy is greater than forgiveness, because God is merciful to us even when we do not sin, just as we can be merciful to those who have never done anything against us. God’s mercy does not just forgive our transgressions but reaches to all weaknesses and needs.

Just as forgiveness flows out of mercy, mercy flows out of love. “But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (Eph.2:4-5). Love is greater than mercy – it can manifest itself even when there is no wrong to forgive or need to meet.

Finally, mercy is also related to grace, which flows out of love. Grace and mercy have the closest possible relationship, yet they are different. Mercy deals with the consequences of sin, while grace deals with sin itself. Mercy offers relief from punishment, grace offers pardon for the crime.

Just look at what the Good Samaritian did. When he found a Jewish traveler who had been robbed and beaten, he held no animosity toward him. Love motivated him to show the man mercy when he bound up his wounds. And when he took him to an inn and cared for him, he showed grace. Such is the expression of mercy working with forgiveness, love and grace.

Ask yourself: Is there someone to whom you need to show God’s mercy, expressed through your love, your grace, our forgiveness? Think of how you can turn your merciful intentions into practical action
